Airport installs state of the art navigation system
Flights are less likely to divert to the US in the event of bad weather thanks to new technology implemented at LF Wade International Airport.Transport Minister Terry Lister said Bermuda was one of the first in the Western hemisphere to implement the new Global Positioning System technology.Previously, pilots relied on visual information to land in Bermuda. Such information was dependent on fair weather conditions. This meant when there was poor visibility airplanes diverted to airports with better technology along the US East Coast. A 2008 study recommended updating Bermuda’s technology. International experts Jeppsen were hired to navigate new routes for airplanes to land in Bermuda.A Ministry spokesman said: “Seven new, state-of-the-art, precision approaches were designed offering pilots a choice of various different routes to take when making their way from mid-air to touchdown.”Four of the new approaches use satellite technology that will make arrivals smoother. The spokesman added: “The seven new approaches ensure greater levels of safety and fuel efficiency, since aircraft can now line up further out and descend more efficiently into Bermuda.”Airport general manager Aaron Adderley said there are 27 different satellites orbiting the planet that are providing the GPS technology to the airport, which will help when visibility is low. He added: “While not completely removing the possibility, these new approaches certainly minimise the likelihood of flights having to divert somewhere to the East Coast when the Island is experiencing severe weather conditions,”Mr Lister added: “These new landing approaches are unique and ensure that we are in a position to assist the US Federal Aviation Association in realising its NextGen initiative.“They’ve been great partners over the years recognising the important role that Bermuda plays in the control of air traffic up and down the very congested East Coast corridor and this helps to strengthen that partnership.”Mr Adderley said additional runway lighting would be the airport’s next priority, as it would help flights arrive in heavy thunderstorms.Useful websites:www.faa.govwww.bermudaairport.com
