26-year-old shot dead: fourth fatal shooting this year

Police investigate following a shooting death in Pembroke.

A 26-year-old man was last night shot dead just metres from his house in Pembroke.The man was said to be riding home on his bike when he was shot three times at close range at the junction of Band Room Lane and North Shore Road around 10.20pm.Residents reported that he was shot in the head by “someone on a bike” who then continued along North Shore Road before speeding up Mission Lane.More than 20 uniformed and plain-clothed police officers swooped on the area and sealed off North Shore Road. Forensic officers could be seen combing the scene for clues.A group of more than 25 residents gathered at the crime scene, many of them in their nightwear, and expressed their shock at what had happened “right on our doorstep”.The man's father and brother could be seen weeping uncontrollably. Police officers tried to keep them away from the scene, but they refused to move. Instead they sat on the road and held their heads in their hands.The man's body could be seen laying in the middle of the entrance to Band Room Lane, laying next to a black motorcycle.Police announced that North Shore Road, from Blackwatch Pass to Glebe Road, would remain closed until the early hours of the morning.The man was pronounced dead at the scene but police will not formally identify him until his next of kin have been informed.One neighbour said: “He was from a really nice family, they don't deserve this.” He is thought to have lived with his family in a nearby apartment.One woman said: “I heard three shots one after the other. It was pap, pap, pap. Then I heard the bike screeching up Mission Lane.“I peeped out the curtains but was too scared to go outside until I heard the sirens and saw the flashing lights.“Now there's police everywhere. I know the man and his family. What a thing for them to have to see.”Another woman said: “You just don't expect this to happen on your doorstep. I know Bermuda is small, but the other shootings have seemed so far away, until now.“I am scared, real scared. I am scared for my daughter the most. This is crazy, nowhere is safe anymore.”A Police spokesman said: “Police responded to a confirmed firearms incident at about 10.20pm on Sunday at the junction of North Shore Road and Band Room Lane in Pembroke.“As a result a 26-year-old Pembroke man received gun shot wounds and was pronounced dead at the scene.”Anyone with any information regarding the shooting is asked to telephone police 299-8115 or the indepedent Crimestoppers hotline on 800-8477.Later last night police responded to a report of an unconfirmed firearm incident that took place around 11.55pm on Horseshoe Road in the area of Southampton Rangers Sports Club.Police are investigating shots fired in that area. No one was injured and police are asking for anyone who may have seen anyone acting suspiciously to contact police on 295-0011 or the independent, confidential Crime Stoppers Bermuda hotline on 800-8477.
