Former Senate President Alf Oughton is to be honoured for his work in the community and in the health sector. He will be recognised for his work at the Bermuda Health Foundation’s 9th Annual Salute to Service Award Luncheon on June 24 at the Fairmont Hamilton Princess Hotel.Mr Oughton rose through the ranks at Bermuda Electric Light Co. Ltd. and retired as President and CEO on August 1, 1992. He was appointed to the Senate in November 1993 and elected as Senate President in March 1998 and retired ten years later.According to a statement, the Bermuda Health Foundation says it “believes it is fitting to recognise Mr Oughton for his stellar work in the community, in particular for the thorough Health Care Review Report that he produced in May 1996”. Mr. Oughton was appointed to chair the Health Care Review Sub-Committee by the then Minister of Health, Social Services and Housing, Quinton Edness in September 1993 “in response to community concerns regarding the escalation of health care costs and the quality of health care afforded to residents in Bermuda”.In addition to presenting the Salute to Service Award to Mr Oughton, the Foundation will also present scholarship awards to successful applicants. To date the Bermuda Health Foundation has presented scholarship awards totaling more than $300,000.Foundation chairman, Philip Butterfield said that in spite of the current economic climate, the Foundation remained committed to assisting Bermudian students pursuing careers in the health care field.“Although Bermuda and the rest of the world continue to experience the affects of the global recession, the Bermuda Health Foundation is committed to assisting those Bermudians who are interested in careers in the medical field,” said Mr Butterfield. “Last year we received a record number of applicants and as usual it was difficult for us to select four students to receive our annual scholarship.”Recognising a shortage of health care workers globally and in Bermuda in particular, brothers Philip Butterfield, former Premier Dr Ewart Brown and Vincent Hollinsid, along with the late Murray Brown established the Bermuda Health Foundation.
