Bermudians celebrate Bermuda Day in London

More than 150 Bermudians gathered in Camden, London to celebrate Bermuda Day yesterday. The event, the Annual Bermuda Day London BBQ, was the third of its kind.Organiser Beatnik Rubaine, who has lived in London for seven years, said the event is a way to bring Bermudians together from across the UK to celebrate their home country and heritage.“We decided to do a Bermuda Day in London because we wanted to expose people in the UK to a bit of Bermudian culture and to have a main event for Bermudians to get together. Also we have designs on a Bermudian festival, and this is a good stepping stone.”Mr Rubaine said he had been to several of the Premier’s dinners, held annually by the Government of Bermuda for students and young adults in London, and that the BBQ is another way to bring people together. This year they decided to hold the event the weekend after May 24 because today is a public holiday in the UK.The event was sponsored by Love Drinks, which supplied Gosling’s Black Seal Rum, and Corona. Each year it has grown bigger and better, Mr Rubaine said.“This year we have added other elements to the day such as games, a limbo competition and we have more Bermudian artists performing.“We have also added other Bermudian drinks such as Yellow Bird and Bermuda Triangle, which will complement Rum Swizzle and Dark ‘n Stormy.“As an added bonus, we have ‘Reggae Roast’ one of London’s biggest reggae sound systems playing a four-hour set.”Mr Rubaine is a currently a chef in London. He is also a musician and member of the Spredluv group, which is a collective similar to Bermuda’s Chewstick.Former Progressive Labour Party MP Delaey Robinson brought his two children Kelsey, 12, and Myles, nine, to the event. The boys are currently in school in London while Mr Robinson splits his time between the Island and the UK.Kelsey said: “I was home four weeks ago. I’ve been going to school here for the last three years. I miss the beaches and going out on boats the most about Bermuda. It’s cool to be here today with lots of other Bermudians.”Mr Robinson said he heard about the party from his goddaughter who was also expected to attend the event.Mark Lomas, who is originally from St David’s, moved abroad in 1998. He performed at yesterday’s event.“It’s great to be here today, everyone is enjoying the music,” he said.Jessie Shane came to the event with five Bermudian friends. They brought Bermuda flags and shirts from Queen Street store Flying Colours.“It’s just really nice to get everyone together,” she said. “In a big city it’s great to spend a day with people from home.”Laura Andrews added: “Camden is a very international area and it’s wonderful to see Bermuda’s music and culture on display.”
