More than 50 students get Govt summer jobs
Twelve students have been awarded internships this year, while more than 50 have been awarded summer employment, Government said.Addressing the House of Assembly on Friday, Minister of Business Development and Tourism Patrice Minors announced that eight Bermudian students were accepted into Technology Leadership Forum’s (TIF) recently launched internship Programme.Another four students were enrolled in the David H Allen Summer Internship Programme, which offers opportunities in the tourism field.“This Government has demonstrated that we are committed to providing quality opportunities for our youth, and part of that commitment means preparing them for the future,” Ms Minors said. The TIF interns have been placed in various offices around the Island, including the Bermuda Hospitals Board and Logic Communications, while the David H Allen interns will work in the Department of Tourism, iCrossing Ltd or Lou Hammond and Associates. In a separate statement, Minister of Public Works Derrick Burgess announced that 57 students have been assigned places to work within the ministry through the Summer Student Employment Initiative, nearly double the number of students as last year.“With the expected surge of applications from our students, along with the many concerns relayed to me from students and parents because of the lack of jobs this summer, I determined that my Ministry would do its part to take on as many students as possible,” Mr Burgess said.“Based on these efforts, it is hoped that the Summer Student Employment Initiative will further reduce the number of unemployed young persons during the long summer, which could result in less desirable activities, and thus compound our social issues.”Useful website: www.gov.bm.
