Derrick Burgess unveils a memorial to Tyaisha Cox at the Victor Scott Primary school.

Margaret Moore shed tears of joy today as a memorial was unveiled in honour of her six-year-old daughter Tyaisha, who tragically died in 2003.Mrs Moore said the plaque perfectly captured her daughter's smile - something her family miss most. “She was always smiling no matter what happened,” she said.  Presented by the Ministry of Public Works, the memorial is mounted at Tyaisha's school Victor Scott Primary, in Pembroke.Tyaisha Cox had got off the 8C bus from Somerset with her brother Tyshaun Brown to attend summer camp at Purvis Primary School, in Warwick, when tragedy struck. The bus had stopped to let the children off and then immediately waited while they crossed the road using the pedestrian crossing. But as the traffic waited, a car, driven by a young woman, pulled out from behind the bus to overtake and ran through the crossing, hitting Tyaisha. She was placed on a life support machine, but doctors said there was no hope for recovery. Her mother and stepfather O'Neil Moore made the heartbreaking decision to switch off the machine and donate her organs.Public Works Minister Derrick Burgess who made the presentation to the family said” “Through her parents' couragous decision to donate her organs she lives on through others.”He added: “While this happened eight years ago those that knew her will never forget.“They will never forget the pain of that sad morning, but I am also sure they will never forget her bright smile, her love of singing and clapping in morning assemblies.“During her short life she had an affect on so many people, lifting them up with her smile and positive can-do attitude. Indeed this is how we should remember Tyaisha - happy, bright and smiling.”Mr Burgess said in Tyaisha's memory, Government would look to bring legislation “in the near future” to reduce any chances of a tragedy like this happening again.
