Seven taken to hospital after two car crash

Three young children, including a baby, had a lucky escape after a car they were travelling in was involved in a head-on collision in Somerset.Two cars travelling in opposite directions collided near St James Church on Somerset Road shortly before about 6.30pm yesterday. A family-of-five was in the car travelling eastbound out of Somerset, this included a man and woman in the front and three girls in the back, aged ten, six and two months.The family managed to get themselves out of their vehicle before the emergency services arrived, but they were all taken to King Edward VII Memorial Hospital by ambulance.They were all treated for shock with the six and ten year-olds also understood to have suffered whiplash and concussion.The car travelling westbound into Somerset was being driven by a man with a woman in the passenger seat. The driver managed to free himself but the woman had to be pulled from the wreckage by firefighters.The man and woman were also both taken to hospital by ambulance and their injuries remain unknown. The collision caused lengthy traffic delays.Today a Police spokesman said: "Around 6pm on Thursday, police attended a reported two vehicle road traffic collision resulting in injury on Somerset Road in Sandys parish near the Arnold’s Supermarket."It appears that two cars were traveling along Somerset Road, driven by a 31-year-old Sandys woman and an 18-year-old Pembroke man respectively, when they collided."Including the drivers, there were two adults and three children in one vehicle and two adults in the other vehicle. All seven individuals were taken to King Edward VII Memorial Hospital via ambulance for medical assessment and treatment."Their injuries are not believed to be life threatening. Both cars were extensively damaged as a result. Traffic was diverted away from the scene for approximately an hour and a half. Inquiries into this incident are underway.
