Murder victim died within minutes, court hears
The father of murder victim Shane Minors told Supreme Court this morning that he heard the gunshots that killed his son, but didn’t realise how close they were. The 30-year-old was shot dead at the bottom of a stairwell which led to his lower floor apartment, in a South Terrace building he shared with his family.Ronniko Burchall, 22, and Leroy Symons, 20, have both been charged with the December 17, 2009 murder.Mr Burchall alone faces charges of using a firearm to commit murder. Both men have pleaded not guilty to their charges.Mr Minors’ father, Alan, took the stand this morning. He said he woke at 1.12am on December 17 to the sound of gunshots.“I was kind of half asleep,” he said. “I was dozing and it woke me up and made me jump.“It was loud enough for me to hear it, but it seemed to me that it was coming from the field area. That would be Victor Scott Field. It didn’t sound too close.”Mr Minors said he looked through the windows, but didn’t see anything suspicious, so he went back to sleep. The next morning Mr Minors was getting ready for work when his nephew, Damani Burchall, knocked on the door and told him his son was lying in the stairwell unresponsive. The pair attempted to revive him but emergency personnel later pronounced him dead.Forensic Pathologist Christopher Milroy said he was killed by a gunshot wound to his chest, which passed through his lung diaphragm, kidney and spleen. He testified that the wound killed him within minutes. The trail continues this afternoon.
