Trial dates set for alleged gun offences

Several alleged gunmen appeared in Supreme Court today in a busy arraignments session.Jahmel Blakeney, 29, and Sanchey Grant, 19, appeared in connection with the shooting of Shaki Minors and Renee Kuchler outside Southside Cinema in St David’s on April 30, 2009.The two defendants each pleaded not guilty to two counts of attempted murder and two counts of possession of a firearm. The men were remanded in custody until their trial on October 10.Anwar Muhammad, 22, and Shawn Williams, 20, appeared in connection with the attempted murder of Shantoine Princeton Burrows on August 23, 2010.Both men, who are in custody, pleaded not guilty to attempted murder and using a firearm. Their trial is scheduled for November 28, but an earlier date is being considered.Jaron Roberts, 19, and Kamrone Whiting, 18, appeared during the session in connection with imitation firearms charges.They pleaded not guilty to a total of 14 charges relating to using an imitation gun while committing attempted robberies at several locations around Bermuda.The men will remain in custody until their trial starts on November 2.Kyril Burrows, 47, Delcina Bean-Burrows, 48, Greatfield Carmichael, 61, and Calvin Waldron, 43, face a total of 37 charges dishonesty, cheating and money laundering.The four each pleaded not guilty to the charges read out to them, which relate to the alleged conspiracy to defraud the Bermuda Government between January 1, 2005 and June 30, 2008.The four defendants remain on bail and will face trial on January 9 next year, which will be the first trial of 2012.
