More than 1,100 people register as unemployed

A total of 1,121 people added their names to Government’s Island-wide unemployment register.Senator Kim Wilson today revealed the final number of people who had registered during the almost two-week period from June 21 to July 1.Of those registered, they were almost evenly spread between sexes, with 51 percent being men and 49 percent being females.The Minister of Economy, Trade and industry also broke down the statistics into race and nationality.She told the Senate 80 percent of respondents identified themselves as black and 12 percent as white. And 95 percent of respondents were Bermudians, while others were broken down into permanent residents, non-Bermudians spouses and non-Bermudians.The Unemployment Registration Drive was launched to quantify the current unemployment level and to gather information to be used to assist with future job training, retraining and placement.
