Soot from yacht released in Hamilton Harbour

A technical problem onboard visiting luxury yacht Mirabella V caused soot to be released into Hamilton Harbour this week. The vessel was moored off the Royal Bermuda Yacht Club at the time. A Government spokesman described the soot as “non-toxic”, and said there was no cause for alarm.Mirabella V is the largest single-masted yacht ever built. She was launched in 2003 at an estimated cost of more than $50 million. The vessel is part of a fleet of super-yachts once owned by former CEO and chairman of the AVIS car rental company, Joe Vittoria.Said the Government spokesman: “A technical problem onboard the yacht Mirabella V, moored off the Royal Bermuda Yacht Club, has caused the boat to spit out the non-toxic soot into the water,” said a Department of Environmental Protection spokesman.“The ongoing problem is currently being managed by both the Department of Environmental Protection and the Department of Marine and Ports, who stress there is no toxicity associated with the soot.”The problem was caused by a malfunctioning generator, the spokesman said. “Recovery efforts are being undertaken to clean up the soot. In the interim period the Mirabella V is moving west of Spanish Point which, with the prevailing southwesterly wind, will blow this material north-easterly and out to sea.”
