Warwick man fined, banned from driving for 12 monthsA 43-year-old man who flipped his car and left it abandoned on Harbour Road received a hefty fine and was banned from the roads yesterday.Dean Richards, of Warwick, denied driving while impaired on July 17, but admitted refusing to provide police with a sample of breath.Crown counsel Larissa Burgess told Magistrates’ Court Richards was driving west in Paget at 9.45pm when he lost control of his car.The vehicle turned onto its roof, slid into the eastbound lane and hit a wall. Police arrived ten minutes later to find the vehicle abandoned. When Richards returned he showed signs of fresh injury and admitted that he had been drinking.He refused to give a sample of his breath when arrested and told an officer at Hamilton Police Station: “Alcohol did not play a part, just stupidity.”Senior Magistrate Archibald Warner fined Richards $1,000 for refusing to give a breath test, and disqualified him from driving all vehicles for 12 months. Richards was also fined $1,000 for having no third party insurance, and $750 for driving an unlicensed car. He will return to court in September to face a March 10 charge of speeding.Motorcyclist suffers ‘serious’ injuries in road crashA 26-year-old Pembroke man is now being treated in hospital following a single vehicle collision over the weekend.According to police the accident happened early Sunday morning in Devonshire. Said a spokesman: “A motorcyclist struck a wall and a utility poll on Montpelier Road near the junction with First Avenue at around 3.30am.”The rider was taken to King Edward VII Memorial by ambulance.“His injuries are reported as serious but not life-threatening,” the spokesman added.Witnesses should contact Pc Preston Gill on 295-0011.US Airways adjusts winter Philadelphia flight scheduleUS Airways’ flights between Philadelphia and Bermuda will be cut to one per week for a spell this winter due to rising fuel costs.The service will run on Saturdays only between November 29 and December 15, according to spokeswoman Michelle Mohr.A daily run will resume from December 16 to January 3, before it switches to five days a week from January 4 to February 15; the daily service returns from February 16.Ms Mohr said yesterday: “We remain very much committed to Bermuda. These changes are based on high fuel prices and seasonality of the route.”
