A joyful, party atmosphere at Cup Match

The air horns could be heard almost from the Causeway. But even they weren't as loud as many of the outfits on display at Wellington Oval.Oversized hats, multi-coloured frocks and brightly-hued, barely-there bikinis were the order of the day at Cup Match 2011.As much a fashion parade as a cricket match, the event in St George's attracted thousands of spectators, the majority clad in their finest festive gear and determined to have a good time. The party atmosphere was in full swing yesterday afternoon as the game began to draw to a nail-biting close.Hordes of people were still streaming into the ground at 4.30pm, to be met with a heady mix of excited fans, booming music, seafood specialities such as conch fritters and mussel pies, and the ubiquitous rum-based drinks.Lovers of the game watched the wicket intently, while hundreds of others crammed into the Crown and Anchor tent to try their luck with the dice. For some, including tourists Magda Trzuskot and Sonia Zawitkowski, both 21 and from Toronto, it was enough to wander around and soak up the vibes.“I don't even understand the game,” said Magda. “But it's awesome, just one big party. We've been in Bermuda for three days. I could stay here forever. I love the water.”Sonia added: “It's a big party and everyone's in a good mood. We love it.”For British visitors Cat Beaumont, Louise Montgomery and Claire Heaney, the game perhaps made a little more sense. But the trio, staying on the Island with university friend Camilla Hall, were happy to take a break from keeping score and sample some of the free drinks in the Visitors' Tent.“If they gave us bank holidays at home for the cricket, I'd watch it there too,” said Claire, 29, from Cardiff.Louise, 28, from Leeds, said: “I'm a cricket fan because I live near Headingley. I've had a great day. It's a great atmosphere and it's shaping up to be a really exciting game. Everyone's singing, dancing, really friendly and really happy.”Cat, 28, from Manchester, said the jerk chicken and rum swizzles were particular highlights. “It's like nothing I have been to in England at all. It's fun, colourful and loud.”Proving her point was Collingwood Bean, 59, from Cedar Hill, Warwick, who was wearing a gigantic wire and brown paper hat, spray painted in two shades of blue to mark his devotion to the home side, and fitted out with a radio and speakers.“This is something that I have been doing for the last 15 years,” he said. “I just had to come out because my team was going to win. We are finally going to have a victory.”He wasn't wrong, either, though Somerset fans tried hard to convince themselves it wasn't the case earlier in the day. Jahnika Tucker, 26, was there to cheer on brother Janeiro, an all-rounder on the visiting side.“It's exciting,” she said. “Everybody is looking for a challenging and interesting game and it has been one. Somebody should win, rather than it being a draw. I'm for Somerset!”So was PLP Senator LaVerne Furbert, who watched the game with a group of friends. “I always enjoy Cup Match, it's my favourite time of year,” she said. “I always enjoy seeing old friends.”She added: “I'm hoping we will still win. There's a chance.”Police reported a largely trouble-free two days at St George's Cricket Club, with just one incident of note.A 40-year-old man was arrested at the gate with drug paraphernalia and taken to Southside police station, where he was detained. For more pictures click here and here
