Police successful in disrupting gangs over Cup Match

Police said today they were successful in restricting the movement of gangs members and guns across the Island over Cup Match. Before the holiday, authorities had been concerned that criminals would exploit the long weekend.Today at a press conference, police announced they had devoted five days to anti-gang and violence measures, in an “extremely resource-intensive” operation that saw no serious incidents reported over Cup Match. It was the biggest police operation of the year, according to Acting Assistant Commissioner Martin Weekes. He said: “The decision to make it so was taken consciously knowing, as we did, that some of the events were likely to attract thousands of people.”Although a number of well-attended Cup Match events were closed early, Mr Weekes stressed that the final decisions had ultimately been made by organisers, not police.Reserve officers and Bermuda Regiment soldiers had been called upon for policing from Wednesday night until this morning, with officers “out on land and on the water to reassure the public, disrupt criminality and prevent gang violence”.Part of their efforts included “rolling road blocks”.Acknowledging a “knock on effect” on ordinary members of the public from road checks designed to target gang members, Mr Weekes added that police had initiated a “yellow card” system” for the weekend, allowing officers to issue the card equivalent of a verbal warning instead of automatically writing tickets.”On behalf of the Commissioner of Police, we thank the public and the community in general for helping us make Bermuda safer over the Cup Match period,” he said.
