Digicel and CellOne report interruptions during holiday
Congestion and unusually high demand resulted in minor service interruptions on the Island’s cellular networks over Cup Match.
Several customers had reported dropped calls and undelivered text messages during the holiday weekend.
A spokesman for Digicel said the company’s network had been expanded to relieve the pressure placed on it by the heightened demand in areas such as Horseshoe Bay and the St George’s Cricket Club.
“Due to the unusually large crowds that attended Beachfest, delays would have been experienced to some extent by some customers in the area due to the immense amount of sms and data being transmitted from that location,” the spokesman said in a statement.
Meanwhile, a representative for rival provider CellOne admitted that their network had also been affected.
“Due to the amount of people in certain areas there was definitely some congestion, during the two Cup Match days especially,” said Rob McNabb, the company’s communications director.
“There were a few complaints of slow data connections and a few dropped calls, but there were no outages.”
