Healthcare students today praised a Ministry of Health programme that offered them hands-on experience in their field this summer.A total of 43 students were employed this summer in various Government departments and quangos, such as Environmental Health and King Edward VII Memorial Hospital, as part of the summer student programme.Char-Lee Simons, who recently graduated from Strayer University in Virginia, said the programme gave her an opportunity to work towards her goal of becoming a healthcare executive.“It is my hope that through this experience, I will be able to fine tune my skills through application in the real world,” she said.Another summer student, Ronnelle James, said she chose to work with the Hamilton Health Centre because of her love of children and science.However, after spending time working in the Hamilton Clinic Laboratory, she said she discovered an interest in diagnostics and research.“I have now begun to investigate the possibility of a career in genetic research or paediatric oncology with hopes of contributing to the treatment and cure of child illnesses and cancer,” she said.Keenan Van Putten, who is getting ready to enter his final year at the Hampton University’s School of Nursing, said he started working at King Edward VII Memorial Hospital more than a decade ago, steadily moving towards a career.“I have had the privilege of witnessing certain medical procedures and operations,” he said.“Working alongside the operating room staff has provided me with an insight into healthcare that I never knew existed.”Bermuda College student Kelee Darrell said she applied to work with Environmental Health for the sake of having a summer job, she said the position has helped her develop her interpersonal skills.“I truly believe that I was placed in this job for a reason and my lessons learned will follow me through life, especially in my career choice,” she said.Speaking at a press conference, Health Minister Zane DeSilva stressed the importance of work experience offered in the programme.“With everything that we hear about the job market right now, both in Bermuda and abroad, one thing is for certain: experience is key,” Mr DeSilva said.“The Ministry’s employment of summer students is an excellent opportunity for students to gain practical experience while encouraging them to pursue a career in the Bermuda healthcare system.“To date 43 students have been employed within the Ministry’s departments and quangos for the summer of 2011.”Useful website: www.gov.bm
