Ophelia to bring strong winds, heavy surf

Hurricane Ophelia was upgraded to a Category 3 storm earlier today, and is currently expected to pass 150 miles to Bermuda’s East tomorrow evening.Ophelia currently packs maximum strength winds of 100 knots (115mph), and at 12 noon today was about 620 miles South-Southeast of the Island.The Bermuda Weather Service predicts strong winds for Saturday, and heavy surf off the South Shore, as Ophelia bears down on the Island.It is currently expected to be a Category 2 storm by the time it nears Bermuda.A tropical storm watch is currently in effect.Strong winds with gale force gusts will buffet the Island throughout tomorrow, with moderate winds and strong gusts predicted for Sunday.Occasional showers, with possible thunder, can be expected through Monday.Ophelia’s closest point of approach is now predicted for 8pm Saturday.
