Excuse me, is that a cuckoo in your tree?

Yellow-billed Cuckoo

Hundreds of cuckoos are on the Island - after being blown off course by Hurricane Ophelia and other strong weather fronts. The Bermuda Audubon Society has been receiving reports of 'an unusual bird in my garden', according to President Andrew Dobson."In almost all cases the identification has been that of Yellow-billed Cuckoo," he said.He estimated that there may be several hundred cuckoos on the Island with sightings all over Bermuda - island, including ten birds in one tree in St. George's.Mr Dobson commented: "This species of bird is fairly common in the eastern half of the US where it breeds in woodlands and streamside trees."Although numbers rise and fall with insect outbreaks, there has been a fall in the number of birds over the last 50 years due probably due to habitat loss."Some birds migrate as far south as Argentina. The birds that have arrived in Bermuda should find plenty of insects, especially caterpillars but they shouldn't really be here in Bermuda at all! Many will hopefully continue south with breezy north-easterly winds forecast for the next few days."
