Fees waived for parade
The City of Hamilton yesterday agreed to waive fees for one Christmas Parade, while agreeing to help fund another. In a meeting of the Corporation at City Hall, the City agreed to waive some fees related to the annual Santa Claus Parade after hearing the parade could otherwise be cancelled.Alderman Pamela Ferreira said the committee organising the popular parade would not likely be able to afford the City’s fees, including the costs of electricity used by vendors, using the city’s sound system and advertising road closures.“They don’t know how much the bill will come too, but they know the bill is coming,” she said.City staff explained the fees were not intended to draw a profit, only cover the expenses the city would incur from events. While none of the board members were opposed to the idea of waiving fees in this case, Deputy Mayor Glen Smith voiced some concerns about setting an unwanted precedent.“The next thing you know everybody will be asking for a break,” Mr Smith said. “I do support this initiative, but we have to remain cautious.”After some deliberation, it was determined that the fees associated with the parade be waived, with vendors at the parade being responsible for their own electricity costs. The City also agreed to put forward $5,000 towards fireworks for the annual Christmas Boat Parade.
