Police have formed a new review team to help in unsolved major crime cases, it was announced this afternoon.Government has given funding for the six-strong team, which consists of two retired Bermudian officers and four retired UK officers.A Police spokesman said: “The team of six is comprised of two recently retired BPS detectives and four retired detectives from the UK. The six officers bring a combined total of over 200 years of policing experience to the BPS.“Carlton Adams is well known to the local community having retired as an Assistant Commissioner in 2008 after a 40-year career, mostly served in the Criminal Investigation Department (CID). Likewise, Peter Giles a former police prosecutor and Detective Inspector joins the team after his recent retirement in 2010 after 35 years of service.“Their four counterparts include a Chief Inspector, an Inspector and two constables who have all served in either the Metropolitan Police, Durham or Northumbria.“The six officers were selected for their experience in investigations of major crimes including murder, gun and gang crime. The officers have been engaged for six months and it is anticipated that their work alongside their full-time counterparts in the Serious Crime Unit will lead to the development of outstanding cases.”National Security Minister Wayne Perinchief, and Commissioner of Police, Michael DeSilva, welcomed the team this week.Mr DeSilva said: “We are grateful to the Government for supporting and financing this initiative. These officers bring a wealth of expertise that we hope will be able to identify new leads on older files, while we maintain our push to investigate the current cases. At the end of the day we are aiming to reassure families of victims that we are doing all that can be done, but if we can close cases with prosecutions that will of course be ideal.”Mr Perinchief said: “The Government is pleased to support this pro-active approach by the Commissioner and these experienced officers will be a tremendous asset to the work of the Bermuda Police Service. We must do all that we can in support of solving crime and bringing offenders to justice.”
