Queen allows special designation for church’s 400th anniversary
St Peter’s Church in St George’s will be redesignated as ‘Their Majesties Chappell’ as part of the landmark’s 400th anniversary. The term was originally used to refer to the church in the 1690s during the reign of King William III and Queen Mary.Government House announced yesterday that the Queen has consented to the redesignation, with an “intituling” service scheduled to take place to mark the occasion expected to take place on March 18 next year. The original St Peter’s Church was built in 1612, making it the oldest continuously used Anglican Church in the world. The original building was constructed with wood and thatch; a stone structure was built in 1713. Since then, it has undergone several renovations. In addition to being used as a house of worship, the building was historically used as a courtroom and a place for drying tobacco.
