25-year-old woman fined for obstructing police

A 25-year-old Pembroke woman this morning admitted racing away from police and struggling to escape handcuffs following a traffic stop.Zurai Scott pleaded guilty to charges of resisting arrest and obstructing an officer, as well as traffic offences including driving a vehicle without third party insurance.The court heard that yesterday, officers on mobile patrol stopped Scott after seeing her disobey traffic signs at the corner of Court Street and North Street.She was said to be immediately irate and drove away while officers were attempting to issue her a ticket.The officers were unable to follow her, but later attended her apartment to arrest her for obstructing police. She allegedly swore repeatedly at the officers and attempted to keep the officers from handcuffing her.Appearing in court, Scott admitted resisting arrest and obstructing officers, but denied that she had at any point failed to obey a traffic sign.Senior Magistrate Archibald Warner fined Scott $400 for obstructing the officers and convicted her of resisting arrest, but chose to issue no further sentence on that charge.However, he fined Scott a total of $1,850 for driving an unlicensed vehicle, driving without a seat belt and driving a vehicle without third party insurance, banning her from driving all vehicles for a period of six months.
