‘Take Back The Night’ walk to be held tonight

The Women’s Resource Centre is to hold its annual Take Back The Night walk tonight.Bad weather prevented the walk from happening earlier this month as scheduled.Take Back the Night is designed to raise awareness about the violence that takes places against women and children around the world.Various walks have been held around the globe during the month of October for the past 30 years.Said WRC executive director Elaine Williams: “The main objective of the event is to bring awareness to the growing and alarming problem of violence against women and their families in Bermuda.“The walk will emphasise the unacceptable lack of freedom that women have because of fear, increase the awareness that violence against women is unacceptable and demonstrate to those who are suffering, that hope and support are available.“I urge everyone to become a part of the efforts to ‘Take Back The Night’ by coming out to show your support by joining the walk.“We want victims to know that they are not alone; we and hundreds of Bermuda residents support them and are not afraid to show it.”Persons interested in participating should meet at Victoria Park for a 6.30pm start. The walk usually takes about an hour.Added Ms Williams: “Men are most welcome. Bring the whole family.“This event is a great way to show the community that enough is enough. We want the violence to stop,”For more information, or to sign up, telephone 295-3882 or e-mail wrcevents[AT]wrcbermuda.bm.
