Miss Bermuda Jana Outerbridge beat out numerous competitors this weekend, but was unable to bring home the title of Miss World. For the last two weeks, Ms Outerbridge has represented Bermuda in the 61st Miss World Competition, with yesterday’s finale broadcast live to millions of viewers across the world.Ms Outerbridge took part in a demonstration of traditional dances wearing an adapted version of a Gombey costume created by Kelzine Thompson, including feathered headpiece.Despite her efforts, she was unable to reach the top 20, and the title of Miss World was eventually captured by Miss Venezuela, Ivian Sarcos, with Miss Philippines and Miss Puerto Rico earning first and second runner-up respectively. The 22-year-old Tennessee State University graduate ended the day earning 155 points, enough to tie for 76th place with competitors from Vietnam, Belarus and Uruguay. However, she made the Island proud, outscoring representatives from 32 other nations including Germany, Honduras, Portugal and Egypt. Her greatest success in the competition came in the Beach Beauties competition, where Ms Outerbridge reached the final 36 for a 32nd place finish.Premier Paula Cox said yesterday that Ms Outerbridge typified the gold standard of Bermuda, representing the Island with dignity and grace.“For that, we are truly grateful,” Ms Cox said. “Seeing Miss Outerbridge on stage with her Gombey-inspired costume reminded all of us about the potential that exists in Bermuda’s people, and I am confident that she has inspired a whole generation to live out their dreams.“I often say, we are giants, not grasshoppers. Despite the fact that we are a small territory, we have a big heart and great people who wish to achieve extraordinary things for the people of Bermuda.“Our Miss Bermuda, Jana Outerbridge, typifies this and we are proud of her.”In 1979, Bermudian Gina Swainson earned the Island international attention when she won Miss World, an event celebrated with a national holiday.
