Attempted murder-accused arrested at Christmas

Police officers told of a Christmastime raid on a house, the discovery of a gun and the subsequent arrest of a man who is now facing attempted murder charges.Noet Barnett, 25, is accused of shooting Jeremiah Dill outside the One Stop grocery store on Parsons Road in Pembroke on October 4, 2010. Mr Dill suffered three bullet wounds but survived the attack.Mr Barnett was arrested in relation to the crime almost three months later, just before Christmas.Today, Detective Chief Inspector Nicholas Pedro told Mr Barnett’s trial that on the morning of December 22, 2010, he went to Mr Barnett’s residence in Footbridge Lane, Pembroke which was being searched under the Firearms Act.After receiving “additional information” from other police officers, he later proceeded to St Monica’s Road, Pembroke, then on to nearby East Gate Lane in the Government Gate area.Det Chief Insp Pedro said a man named Kofi Dill had been arrested at his residence on that lane, along with a woman, on suspicion of possessing a firearm. Armed police were surrounding the house, which was being searched under the Police and Criminal Evidence Act.“Whilst this was going on I walked in an easterly direction along East Gate Lane and about 15 to 20 metres from the door of Mr Dill’s residence I observed a black bag resting behind a low stone wall. This item was in plain view,” explained Det Chief Insp Pedro.A piece of asphalt was resting on top of the bag, which was found to contain a Rexio revolver gun wrapped in a red cut-off sleeve, plus a pair of yellow motocross gloves.Next, the jury heard from Detective Sergeant Arthur Glasford who went to Marsh Folly Road, at the junction with Factory Lane, on the afternoon of that same day.Det Sgt Glasford said he was sitting in a stationary unmarked police car when he saw Mr Barnett get out of a grey car directly in front of Factory Lane. Mr Barnett began walking up Factory Lane, Pembroke, in the direction of East Gate Lane.Det Sgt Glasford said that he approached Mr Barnett and told him he was being detained for a search under the Firearms Act. He then searched him and arrested him on suspicion of possessing a firearm. He took Mr Barnett to Hamilton Police Station where DNA and gunshot residue tests were done on him.Cross-examining Det Sgt Glasford, defence lawyer Victoria Pearman pointed out that he could not know where Mr Barnett was planning to go when he spotted him heading towards East Gate Lane. The officer agreed. The jury heard from prosecutor Rory Field yesterday that tests on the gun found on East Gate Lane showed it was the one used to shoot Mr Dill on October 4, 2010. It had also been used in three other shootings, including the murder of Raymond Troy “Yankee” Rawlins.Det Sgt Glasford took the gun with him to the US in January 2011 and handed it over to Florida-based forensic expert Jan Johnson, along with the gloves found in the bag.Mr Barnett denies charges of attempted murder, using a firearm and handling a firearm, and the case continues.
