Students and staff at CedarBridge came together yesterday to raise more than $2,000 for a fellow student’s leukaemia treatment.Nahgé O’Brien, 16, was diagnosed with leukaemia on Boxing Day last year. While he was able to return to CedarBridge in September following initial treatment, he has since had to travel to Tennessee’s St Jude’s Children’s Hospital.Upon hearing the news, S3 Guidance Counsellor Roshanda Caines said that the staff and students at the school knew they wanted to do something to help his family deal with the financial burden.Yesterday, the school held a grub day, with students asked to bring in $4 to take part, but Mrs Caines said many students decided to go above and beyond the call of duty.“One student brought $50. Others gave in $20 and $10 bills,” she said. “We have had a tremendous show of support from the students and the faculty. Out of 700 students, we had 500 participate.“We just wanted to help in any way we could as a school. Everyone has been very supportive.”She said the grub day managed to raise around $2,500 towards Nahgé’s treatments, but student Leroyce Mills said the fundraiser is just the first of many, including a teacher’s breakfast to be held before the end of the semester.“We put some ideas together and this is the first one. There are going to be more,” she said.Those who are interested in making a donation for Nahgé’s treatment can make donations through Sweet SAAK Bakery in St George’s, or to the People’s Market at CedarBridge.
