Daughter stole $21,500 from mother

A 57-year-old St George’s woman who took $21,500 from her mother’s bank account has admitted the offence in Magistrates’ Court.Helene Sutcliffe created letters of authorisation in her mother’s name to remove the money over five occasions from March 14 to July 6.“I am very remorseful for what I’ve done,” she told Senior Magistrate Archibald Warner, “but my mother was under the assumption that I had a job.” The court heard from Crown counsel Kirsty-Ann Kiellor that Sutcliffe is in fact unemployed.The withdrawals were spotted by Sutcliffe’s sister, and she was charged with forgery and obtaining by deception on November 4.An out patient at the Mid-Atlantic Wellness Institute, Sutcliffe said that she had been giving her mother money that she was unable to afford.Mr Warner ordered a social inquiry and psychological report, and granted Sutcliffe bail of $2,000. She must return to court on January 26.
