Post offices could close due to decreasing demand

Some post offices could close following review of the service now underway.

Some post offices could close following a review of the Bermuda Post Office (BPO) now under way.The review is to determine how the organisation can move forward with less physical mail being delivered due to the convenience of the internet.Consultants are now considering how to consolidate offices and protect jobs, a Government spokeswoman announced.“The review has focused on the development of a range of business scenarios to assist the Ministry with its policy level decision making for the BPO as it confronts the growing challenges of the need for postal sector reform head on,” she said.“In an environment where mail volumes have been decreasing by one million pieces of mail each year for the past few years and where electronic communications has become the new norm, a strong emphasis must be placed on post office consolidation while simultaneously working to protect jobs. This could mean that some post offices may close amongst other changes.”The postal services in the United States and the United Kingdom were facing similar challenges, the spokeswoman added.
