Four people who have made a difference in the community are to be honoured for their efforts this weekend.Sports coaches Calvin Simons and Mike Stovell and Correne Dummett and David Thompson will be acknowledged for decades of work. The four will be honoured by Imagine Bermuda as part of its YES Day, which will be held Sunday from 1pm to 7pm at TN Tatem Middle School.“An African proverb reveals that we each stand on the shoulders of giants,” said Imagine member Glenn Fubler. “These gifts offered by those who provided our foundation, reminds us that we too have the opportunity to offer gifts to those that follow. All of us could find ‘giants’ in our past that offered us a platform from which we were able to move forward.”The event will be attended by area residents as well as Governor Sir Richard Gozney, Government Estates Minister Michael Scott and Opposition Leader Craig Cannonier. Those present will pause from the day of family activities at 2pm to honour “a group of residents who have gone above and beyond to provide gifts for our young people”, Mr Fubler said. The four selected all live or work in organisations in Warwick or Paget.n Mr Simons founded the Pacers Track Club 30 years ago. Through it, he helped develop the athletic abilities of young people across the Island, many of whom received track scholarships to further their education. He also spent 15 years as a coach of the junior teams at PHC.n Mr Thompson’s group Overseas Missions has travelled the world assisting locals in building homes. Approximately 40 residents accompanied him to Zambia earlier this year to help construct homes.n Mr Stovell has worked with Paget Community Club for 25 years, offering a constructive outlet for young people mainly through football in an area of the Island that has experienced various challenges.n Mrs Dummett set up a breakfast and lunch programme that feeds students in a variety of schools who may not be getting meals at home. The programme serves some 70-odd students. Last year Mrs Dummett and her seven or so volunteers raised $30,000 to serve those students in need.Said Mr Fubler: “Each of these stories of these ‘giants’ is unique. However, the common theme is that they all have gone above & beyond their own interests and served the wider good.“That is what makes them ‘giants’, since their loving actions have widened their territory and enhance the community.“Their example reminds us, that we each have the potential to bring out the giant within and offer our shoulders our gifts -to the upcoming generations.
