‘Amazing Race’ spin-off heads for Bermuda
Reality TV fans from across the world are coming to the Island, courtesy of the CBS show The Amazing Race, to test their skills at a local version of the race, dubbed the Ultimate Bermuda Experience.Five couples have won the chance to compete in the Experience, courtesy of Amazing Race host Phil Keoghan.Their around-the-Island adventure will showcase Bermuda and help out a local charity, as well as pitting contestants against Bermuda-specific challenges. The Amazing Race has garnered a global following, and Mr Keoghan, also its producer, promises a tourism coup for the Island with the January 17 race.Saying he’s “thrilled to be visiting Bermuda to learn about and experience everything the Island has to offer”, Mr Keoghan has chosen the Multiple Sclerosis Society of Bermuda as the event’s official charity. The teams must start bright and early in the Botanical Gardens at 7am, take on an 8am test at Albuoy’s Point, and reach Dockyard for an 11am finish. Video clips of their Bermuda experience will be showcased on the CBS.com website. The competition follows the Amazing Race format: two-person teams vying to get first to different pit-stops, and using a variety of transport one of which is clear from the event’s main sponsor, Elbow Beach Cycles.Director of the event Dudley Thomas said the Ultimate Bermuda Experience will show off Bermuda’s “beautiful landscape, people and culture” to a world audience. And MS Society of Bermuda President Carolyn Armstrong thanked organisers for much-needed help with medical costs that can range from $1,300 to $5,000 each month.Mr Keoghan will also address guests at a $100 ticket January 15 dinner and dance, in support of the MS Society, on the grounds of the Commissioner’s House in Dockyard. The New Zealand-born Amazing Race host has spent his life in locations around the world, taking on cave dives, volcanoes and bungee jumping.Mr Keoghan undertook an epic challenge of his own with the 2009 Ride Across America, in which a group biked the 3,500 miles from Los Angeles to California. A film of that transcontinental journey will be shown during his visit.Useful website: www.elbowbeachcycles.com.
