Four teens in South Africa for World Schools Debates
A delegation of Bermuda students will travel to Cape Town, South Africa, this week to compete in the World Schools Debate Championship.The annual event, which will begin today, brings together students from across the world to compete and interact.Michael Cabot, Shannon Denham, Daniel Pell and Marcus Bean will represent Bermuda this year. Michael and Marcus both competed in last year’s competition, held in Dundee, Scotland, but for Shannon and Daniel, this will be their first international competition.A Bermuda Debate Society spokeswoman said that the topics for debate this year will include issues concerning migration, human rights and political stability and democracy.“These are all controversial topics in modern society and the members of the Bermuda Debate Society believe that it is essential that our youth are able to discuss these topics in an informed and intelligent manner,” said the spokeswoman.“This is an excellent opportunity for the youth of Bermuda educationally, socially and culturally.”Joining the students on the trip are team coach Christianna Hiles and Marisa Sharpe, an international adjudicator for the tournament.
