Four jobs cut at CellOne

CellOne COO Frank Amaral

CellOne yesterday announced four redundancies as part of a reorganisation that will see its customer service call centre work moved to the US.In a statement last night, CellOne chief operating officer Frank Amaral said most of the wireless carrier’s Bermuda call centre staff had been redeployed in the company. However, he said four job cuts had to be made.“As part of the ongoing review of the business we saw the value of leveraging our US-based shared services operations currently utilised by our other group companies,” he said.“As a result, all calls into Customer Service (700.7000) will now be answered by CellOne representatives in the US who are available 24/7.“The majority of the current Bermuda-based call centre employees have been redeployed to customer related back-office functions in order to improve performance in these areas.“Along with changes in the Finance department, the overall reorganisation has resulted in four positions being made redundant effective immediately. While these changes are never easy to make, CellOne is confident in its ability to provide the best possible customer experience as Bermuda’s largest wireless carrier.”Mr Amaral added: “CellOne has always been and continues to be an important employer of Bermudians.“We are very proud of that. Our current staffing levels are at their highest in recent history, in part due to the recent merger with M3 Wireless.”A former employee of KeyTech’s M3 Wireless told The Royal Gazette that by his count not including yesterday’s layoffs around ten employees had been affected by the CellOne merger last year, including two who accepted alternative positions at BTC and several other employees who opted for or were made redundant. The CellOne job cuts follow dozens of layoffs already announced this year by companies including BTC, Bank of New York Mellon, Ironshore, Jupiter and the Bermuda Zoological Society. In addition, 15 people lost their jobs when The Green Lantern restaurant closed its doors last month.
