Man banned from football games

A 36-year-old has been banned from attending football matches for the rest of the season after he punched a security guard in the face.Ian DeSilva told Magistrates’ Court he only reacted after the security guard grabbed his “messed up” arm at the FA semi-final match on Sunday. The Pembroke resident pleaded guilty to a charge of assault. The court heard the incident occurred around 3.10pm at Bernard Park in Pembroke, the site of a match between Wolves and Dandytown.DeSilva punched one of the security officers on duty on the left side of his jaw, after he attempted to search him.Police officers were called to the scene and DeSilva was arrested an hour later. He told the officers that he had warned the security guard not to grab him.He told the court: “I’m sorry for my actions but I asked the guard to stop grabbing my arm; it’s messed up.”Duty Counsel Leo Mills asked Mr Warner to consider the defendant’s guilty plea, his expressed remorse for “flying off the handle”, and the fact that he is currently unemployed.Mr Warner banned DeSilva from all of the Island’s football venues and ordered a social inquiry report. DeSilva was released on bail and a trial date was set for May 10.
