Pause for reflection on fate of City Hall’s pool

(Photo by Mark Tatem)The ultimate fate of the City Hall pool and fountains hangs in the balance.

City councillors are to seek residents’ advice as they consider what to do with the reflecting pool at City Hall in the long-term.The area will initially be filled for safety reasons however the water feature could later be restored. The pool has been left dry since it sprung a leak and City of Hamilton councillors voted unanimously to permanently fill it in last month.“I personally regret my vote on that,” admitted Alderman Pamela Ferreira at a recent City meeting. “You know what it’s like in the heat of the moment, but I’d like to rescind my vote on that.”Councillors expressed concerns last month about the regular expense of topping the pool up and the fact that vagrants were using it for bathing.Hamilton Mayor Charles Gosling said he personally had to intervene on one occasion when he found someone drinking from it, as the heavily chlorinated water was not safe for consumption. The pool was designed by renowned architect Wil Onions and was opened along with the City Hall building in 1960.Ms Ferreira said that since The Royal Gazette reported the pool was to be filled, she had received ten objecting e-mails, including some from architects. One designer pointed out that the 52-year-old fountain was originally designed to reflect the City Hall it caused her to rethink the decision. No date has been set for the City to make its request for ideas, but Mr Gosling said they were open to the idea of keeping a pool in the basin.Noting that parents had voiced concerns over children falling into the empty pool, the mayor said drainage holes would be punched into the deep end of the pool in the interim.Gravel and soil will then be poured in and the basins for the old fountains put in storage, while the fate of the pool is decided.
