Local supplies of Carlsberg Elephant beer are dwindling due to shipping delays out of Denmark.Distributor Burrows Lightbourn Limited has been out of the popular beverage for just over a week.Said Vice President of Sales and Marketing Derek Emery: “Elephant beer lovers can enjoy their favourite beverage as of early next week, once the stocks are replenished. There is however an islandwide shortage for now.“At the moment you will be able to find the last cases in a few establishments across the island,” said Mr Emery. “This unfortunate situation occurred due to a month’s delay of shipments from Denmark.”On that note he said: ”We are putting procedures in place so situations like this do not happen again.”Meanwhile, supplies are running out at several liquor stores. A spokesman at Hayward’s Liquor Mart in Warwick said there were only a few six packs left on Friday evening.Up at the west end a spokeswoman at Arnold’s Liquors said: “Depending on sales we may be sold out by nine tonight.” And at Court Street Liquors, the cashier said: “We have very little, it may last until Monday.”Court Street Liquors set records for the highest volume of sales on Elephant Beers per square mile in the world in 1999 and 2000.Store owner Roderick Nesbitt told this newspaper in February 2002 that the representative from Danish brewery Carlsberg was caught off guard on a visit to the Island, by the relatively small size of his establishment considering he outsells much larger retail outlets world wide.At that time he said Elephant beer was his biggest seller in recent years — with an average volume of between 12,000 and 14,000 bottles a month. The plaque commemorating the record sales still hangs on the wall in the store to this day.
