Homicide case opened into Bermudian’s road death in US
Bermuda Seventh Day Adventist Bermuda Conference President “stands ready and willing” to support the family of well-known Bermudian Educator Dr. Alma Foggo-York, a pedestrian killed in Huntsville, Alabama.Dr York, 74, was killed in an accident now being tagged a “negligent homicide” by police in Huntsville, Alabama. She was hit by a car as she walked across Puluski Pike in Huntsville on February 9.According to the website al.com, Huntsville Police Chief Lewis Morris told the City Council that police have launched a “criminally negligent homicide case” against the driver who hit Dr. York.The report stated: “Morris told the council Thursday night HPD gave its evidence against the driver in the accident, who has yet to be named, to the Madison County District Attorney’s office.”Plans are now underway to present the case to a grand jury. When the accident occurred the driver stopped at the scene and gave details to the police, but no charges were brought against him at the time.When contacted by The Royal Gazette, SDA Bermuda Conference President Dr Jeffrey Brown said: “We have learned that an arrest has been made in connection with the untimely death of Dr Alma Foggo-York.And while he was would not comment on the investigation, Dr Brown said: “The inspiration of this premiere Bermudian professor, administrator, and philanthropist continues to be felt on both sides of the Atlantic.“While we do not offer any comments on the rubrics of the case before the courts, we do know that these are most trying and difficult times for the Foggo-York family.“ The Bermuda Conference of Seventh-day Adventists stands ready and willing to offer support and comfort to Dr Foggo-York’s family and many friends, both locally and abroad.On Thursday, Huntsville Police Chief Lewis Morris told the Huntsville City Council that police had opened a “criminally negligent homicide” case against the driver who hit Ms York. News of the arrest was distributed locally by Dr York’s sister Kae Foggo, via e-mail yesterday from Costa Rica.Ms Foggo said: “It would be nice to let Bermuda know that we are doing something about this horrible accident that claimed Dean York’s life.“I have also posted, on ‘Change.com’, a petition that I would encourage all of Bermuda to sign as we press forward to have my sister’s wrongful death dealt with so that justice can be served.”Dr York, well-known as Dean York, was well-known to many Bermudian students who attended Oakwood College where she was a former professor in Huntsville and Atlantic Union College in Massachusetts.She was hit by a car while walking across Pulaski Pike in Huntsville on February 9.Formerly of Fractious Street, Bailey’s Bay, Dr York was born and raised in Bermuda and was a professor at Oakwood from the 1980s and as well as a prominent figure in the Seventh-day Adventist Church.It was reported in February that she died at the scene of the crash after being hit by a 2003 Dodge Neon. Dr York was laid to rest in Bermuda at the SDA Cemetery in St George’s on February 19.
