Historic Fort St Catherine in St George's has been officially reopened after extensive renovations to add new computerised displays and fresh signage.Guns at the fort have been repainted and refurbished and the concrete roof covering the ditch in front of the Keep has been repaired.Premier Paula Cox and St George's North MP Dame Jennifer Smith were among the guests at the official reopening yesterday.Minister of Public Works Michael Weeks described the historic landmark as “perhaps Bermuda's most well-known fort”.He explained that the earliest structure was built in 1614, and the current fort was built over the period 1840-1880. It was in use until 1900.It was turned into a tourist attraction in the 1950s and once featured a production of ‘Macbeth', starring Charlton Heston.Mr Weeks said: “While Fort St Catherine has had some renovations and post-storm repairs over the years, several years ago it was decided that major refurbishments were needed to revamp the exhibits and ensure the safety of visitors.”Among the other improvements carried out over the past year are a revamped display of replicas of the Crown Jewels, which, said Mr Weeks “were returned to the fort for display as they are highly requested by the senior patrons”.New and improved lighting has been installed for events such as cocktail receptions and weddings.Mr Weeks thanked all those who assisted with the project.“I encourage everyone to come out and visit the newly refurbished Fort St Catherine so that we might learn from and enjoy a link to our history and culture,” he said. For more pictures click here
