Govt launches Labour Force Survey

Government has today launched a Labour Force Survey to gain up-to-date information about employment trends on the Island.A total of 1,500 households from across all parishes will be quizzed about whether their members are employed, unemployed or underemployed, according to Premier Paula Cox.It will be the first survey of the workforce since the Census was conducted in 2010. The Census showed that there were 2,581 unemployed people at that time, with an official unemployment rate of six percent.”We all know there have been several shifts in the labour force since 2010,” noted Ms Cox at the official launch today.“The labour force survey will obtain the data necessary to update these work force indicators. Thus, Government will have the current statistics and know what shifts are actually taking place in the work force and in which areas.”The survey will run until June 29. Ms Cox called on all those invited to participate in the survey to cooperate by providing full information.Only those aged 16 years and over will be polled, and the survey will be conducted via face-to-face interview and via telephone. The households have already been selected and contacted with an invitation to schedule the interview at a convenient time.Director of Statistics, Valerie Robinson-James, said the survey should take ten to 20 minutes to complete. The interviewers will carry official photo identification and a letter of authenticity from the Department of Statistics.Householders who are visited in person should check the identification papers, recommended Ms Robinson-James.
