Hamilton will provide Wi-Fi beginning in June

Hamilton has gone Wi-Fi to provide internet access to residents and visitors alike due to a new joint venture with TeleBermuda International Limited and the City of Hamilton.Newly elected Mayor Graeme Outerbridge, in making the announcement said the high speed Wi-Fi service will be formally launched in June. And TBI opened the wireless network to allow free access on Bermuda Day “as part of the testing phase” in the lead up to the launch next month.“Once the formal testing period has been completed, the service will be available to anyone who needs temporary or long-term internet access while in Hamilton,” said Mayor Outerbridge. The objective of the test run was to “ensure the system is fully operational, robust and can easily handle large numbers of people using it at any given time”.Mr Outerbridge said: “This is an ideal service for visitors, cruise ship staff together with anyone who may work in the city and needs to ensure they have internet access without being confined to an office and desk.”The beta test ran for 12 hours from 6am to 6pm yesterday. TBI President and CEO Gregory Swan said it gave TBI the opportunity to monitor their network closely and provide the public with free internet access simultaneously.“Similar to the network which is currently operational throughout Dockyard, TBI has installed a Wi-Fi network in Hamilton,” he said.Mr Outerbridge added: Once the testing phase has been completed, the service, which is provided by the City of Hamilton and supported by TBI will be available for purchase on daily, weekly and monthly rates.”He also thanked former Mayor Charles Gosling and his team “who had the foresight to start this initiative”. “We are now seeing the results of their work,” said Mr Outerbridge.
