When you see him, wish Johnny Barnes a happy birthday!
Today marks a special occasion for Bermuda's famed well-wisher Johnny Barnes: his 89th birthday. He told The Royal Gazette he likes to treat every day as special.“It's just a natural thing,” he said of his birthday. “I'll just be myself and keep doing what I'm doing.”In spite of his “aches and pains”, he said he would spend this morning greeting Hamilton's incoming commuters at his usual spot along Crow Lane. People need the love,” he said. “Love solves a lot of problems.”The man most recently titled 'Mr Happy Man' by an online film about his life is as full of love as ever, but abides by a strict work ethic.“My mother told me, John, you were born on a Saturday, so you'll have to work hard,” he said.Mr Barnes and his wife Belvina recently observed another milestone, he added.“On April 12, my wife and I celebrated our 61st anniversary I told her I'm going for another 61.”The internet success of the short film by director Matt Morris has brought Mr Barnes no small measure of notoriety.“The tourists come to me from all over the world and say they have seen me,” he recounted. “I get people coming here to see me because of what I do. When you have the Lord Jesus Christ in your heart, you just can't do otherwise.“I always ask the tourists when they come to talk to me, I ask when they're going home. I pray with them, and they love that. And many of them cry. They come down to me all the time.”He said he made it a point to “always remember a face, never forget a voice”.“Life is beautiful, life is wonderful”, Mr Barnes said.“The people of Bermuda need to love one another. They need to be compassionate and take it easy. I tell them, why drive so fast? Take your time.”Useful website: www.mattmorrisfilms.com.
