The Council on Alcohol and Drug Abuse (CADA) has announced the start of its alcohol awareness campaign, which will be in place over the Cup Match period. The campaign is designed to remind people not to drink and drive over the Cup Match holiday in order to ensure safety to all motorists and pedestrians.CADA has been busy putting up banners and signs to remind people not to drink and drive.Chairman Anthony Santucci said: “The two key messages we are focusing on this holiday period are ABCD — Always use Bus, Cab or Designated Driver and Adults Make the Difference Stop Underage Drinking.”“CADA encourages people who plan to drink to put a plan in place before they leave home, ensuring they will get home safely. This way, they won’t have to be tempted to drive or ride while under the influence of alcohol.”Mr Santucci also reminded the public that “there will be public transportation available to and from the game on both days of Cup Match. Or, people can programme into their cell phones the phone number of a taxi company or taxi driver, so when ready, they can call for transportation”.“Another option is to select a designated driver who will not consume alcohol and will be responsible for driving. The important message is, if you plan to consume alcohol have a plan in place to get home safely.”Goslings is a sponsor of CADA, and with its help a booth will be set up on the second day of Cup Match to provide free water for anyone who needs it.Mr Santucci also reminded the public that providing alcohol to any person under 18 is harmful and that the chance of becoming addicted to alcohol is more likely if a person starts drinking under the age of 18.Said Mr Santucci: “In order to reduce the risk of children and young people drinking alcohol, during Cup Match and at any time during the year we, as adults, should talk to them and let them know why alcohol is harmful for them. We [adults] should also model good alcohol behaviour in front of them.”
