Health department gives measles advice for Olympics travellers

The Department of Health has reminded persons travelling to the London Olympics to get vaccinated for measles before their trip.The virus can infect anyone breathing the same air as someone who is infected and stays in the air up to two hours after the infected person leaves the area.Approximately 20 million people around the world contract measles annually. The disease can lead to serious complications such as pneumonia or encephalitis. It is common in places such as Europe, Asia, Africa and the Pacific.Travellers were also reminded of the importance of being up to date on all other routine vaccinations including rubella, tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis, polio, and influenza. These vaccinations can be received from general physicians. Appointments can also be made with Government’s Travel Clinic on 278-6460
