$120,000 in scholarships for medical students

Education boost: Bermuda Hospitals Board yesterday presented $120,000 in scholarships to local medical students.

Bermuda Hospitals Board has awarded $120,000 in scholarships to medical students in fields predicted to be in high demand.And Bermuda-based subsidiary of GlaxoSmithKline has increased its scholarship support the company will fund an annual award of $30,000, paid out over a two-year period.This year’s recipient is Kelly Savery who is pursuing a doctorate in psychology.Lynae Joseph, BHB career development coordinator, said: “We are very proud to provide scholarships to this year’s winners and congratulate them for their important contribution to our community. BHB is committed to supporting Bermudian students who choose careers in healthcare. We are competing in a global market with a shortage of medical professionals and we recognise the value these young people are bringing to Bermuda by becoming healthcare workers.”Venetta Symonds, BHB CEO, said: “These scholarship recipients will one day join our team as fully qualified healthcare workers. We wish them well as they take the next step towards exciting and rewarding professions. I would also like to pay tribute to GlaxoSmithKline for supporting our students and offering $30,000 to one of our scholarship winners.”This year’s scholarship recipients are:Ÿ Kornelia White, pursuing a bachelor of science degree in medical technology, will receive $30,000 over three years;Ÿ Alshauntae’ Harvey-Hollis, pursuing an associates of science degree in diagnostic sonography, will receive $20,000 over two years;Ÿ Onea Mills, pursuing an associates of science degree in diagnostic sonography, will receive $10,000 for one year;Ÿ Tyka Edness, pursuing a master’s degree in physiotherapy, will receive $20,000 over two years;Ÿ Aaron Wharton, pursuing a master’s degree in physiotherapy, will receive $20,000 over two years;Ÿ Teja Warner, pursuing a bachelor of science in occupational therapy, will receive $30,000 over three years;Ÿ Alleisha Lambert, pursuing a bachelor of science in occupational therapy (Mental Health), will receive $30,000 over three years;Ÿ Dunae Richards, pursuing a bachelor of science degree in nursing, will receive $20,000 over two years;Ÿ Kirsten Nusum, pursuing a bachelor of science degree in nursing, will receive $20,000 over two years;Ÿ Angelita Trott, pursuing a bachelor of science degree in nursing, will receive $20,000 over two years;Ÿ Dashante Burgess, pursuing a bachelor of science degree in nursing, will receive $30,000 over three years;Ÿ Lacie Williams, pursuing a pre-nursing programme, will receive $5,000;Ÿ Wallizia Minors, pursuing a pre-pharmacy programme, will receive $5,000;Ÿ Kelly Savery, pursuing a bachelor of science degree, will receive $30,000 over two years.
