Tributes paid to late footballer
Teammates of former PHC Zebras striker Kallan Johnston yesterday paid tribute to the late footballer.Mr Johnston’s lifeless body was discovered at a Southcote Road, Paget residence last Thursday.Police were dispatched to the scene after receiving a call at around 7.15pm.As of yesterday the cause of Mr Johnston’s death had yet to be confirmed.During his football career Mr Johnston, 49, earned a reputation as a hard working striker who was an integral member of PHC’s team that won multiple league and cup honours and reached the quarter finals of the Concacaf Club Championships during the 1980s.Former Zebras striker Sammy Swan said: “Kallan and I go a long way back and so I have lots of memories playing football with him.“He was in my class at Purvis Primary and I played mini-minors and bantams with him right along up to the First Division (Premier) at PHC. He was a very good player and an integral part of the team.“Kallan was also a good friend and we played football together every day.”Another ex-Zebras player, Kyle Lightbourne, said the late Mr Johnston was an inspiration to aspiring footballers in the Warwick community.“Obviously Kallan was years older than me but we all came from the same neighbourhood,” he said. “As youngsters we used to look up to Kallan because he was a very good player who also attended college (Thomas College).“He was a very good footballer and it’s sad to see that he’s passed away.”Former PHC midfielder Brian Anderson described his late teammate as a cheerful individual.“Kallan always had a joke and a smile for you whenever he saw you,” he said. “He was always a cheerful person.“Kallan had a good spirit about him and he was a good man to play with. He was a good striker who could get you a goal when you needed one. He was a player that worked very hard and wasn’t selfish.”Mr Johnston is the brother of late Devonshire Cougars and PHC defender Ernest Heys Johnston — who died in 2004 after collapsing during a friendly game of football — and uncle of Dandy Town player Heys Wolfe.Mr Johnston is survived by children Denzel, Jazmyn and Natassja.A funeral service for the late PHC footballer will be held today at St Mary's Anglican Church on Middle Road, Warwick. Interment will follow at St. Paul's Cemetery, Paget.
