Road name honour for the late Nelson Bascome

A road dedication ceremony, preluded with a day of football, will be held to honour the memory of the late Nelson Bascome Jr.The road dedication ceremony will be held on September 16 and will start with a morning worship service followed by the afternoon road dedication ceremony.A 10am worship service by Cornerstone Bible Fellowship, held at Ruth Seaton James Auditorium, will commence the second day of memorial activities for the late Health Minister, who died in July 2009. The dedication ceremony will begin at 1.30pm and a road sign and plaque will be unveiled at 22 Friswells Road, Pembroke — home of the late Mr Bascome — where a section of the road will be dedicated to him.Both the plaque and sign have been commissioned by the Ministry of Public Works.At the dedication ceremony, the opening prayer will be given by Brother Paul Richards followed by welcoming remarks by Minister of Public Works Michael Weeks. Premier Paula Cox will also be giving remarks at the ceremony and there will also be a musical selection and ‘thank you remarks’ from representatives of Friswell’s Hill United Inc.A spokesman for the Department of Communications said: “Although it is an open event, attendees are cautioned that seating is only for those who received formal invites either through the mail or by-hand and therefore, since the ceremony is expected to last up to an hour, there could be a significant amount of standing involved.”The celebratory weekend will commence with two afternoon football matches on September 15. The charitable games will be a part of the inaugural Annual Nelson Bascome Jr Focus Trophy Football Match and will act as a fundraiser for Focus Counselling Services — a favourite charity of the late Mr Bascome.
