Football match honours Nelson Bascome

MPs Zane Desilva, Wayne Furbert, Michael Weeks and Mark Pettingill will be taking part in a charity football match today — but there won’t be any politics involved.Instead the politicians will be putting their mettle to the test alongside former football players in the first ever Focus Trophy Football Match. The game will be played in honour of long time MP Nelson Bascome, who died suddenly from a heart attack in 2009.The game will kick off at Devonshire Recreational Club at 3pm.Fun castles, Gombeys and music will be on offer from 2pm, while comedian Bootsie will be the sports commentator for the afternoon.Players will include former Devonshire Cougars player Donald Norford, former national players Garrett (Punchy) Dill and Walter Musson and former national team captain Shawn Smith. The teams will be coached by former West Ham United star Clyde Best and Andrew Bascome.Money raised will go towards substance abuse intervention agency Focus’ crucial services, explained director Sandy Butterfield.“Focus Counselling is in need of funding so this was one of our ideas for a fundraising event and it was to honour Nelson Bascome,” Ms Butterfield said. “Nelson was an intricate part of Focus and a big supporter so we are having this event in his memory.”She encouraged the community to come out for a great afternoon of exciting, family entertainment. The public should also attend in support of the worthy cause, she said.“We work with people who are suffering with the disease of addiction and help them turn their lives around.“It has always been our mission to help those who are suffering from addiction get clean and become productive citizens in our community and that also was a mission of Nelson’s as well.“It will be a fun game because so many of our football celebrities that aren’t playing any more, including some of our politicians, are taking part.“But it’s just about having a good time and having a great family day out. There’s no politics involved in any of this. This is just pure fun, like how Bermuda used to have fun.”Two games will be taking place, starting with the match between the former football players and some of the Island’s leading politicians. The second game will pair some of Bermuda’s young players against the professionals, according to an event flyer. There will also be a raffle on offer, with prizes including lunch for two at Grotto Bay Hotel, a dive excursion with Fantasea, gift certificate from Willowstream Spa and brunch at Henry VII.Tickets, $7 each or $20 for a family of four, are available online at www.bdatix.bm or at the gate. Patron tickets include VIP seating and an after game reception cost $150.
