‘Thank you’ party for rescuers of waiter saved from drowning

An Indian waiter who was rescued from drowning by a beach volleyball team will thank them at a party today.Rama Gupta is now fully recovered from his ordeal at Horseshoe Beach and heading back there for the celebration.The Royal Gazette exclusively reported on the heroic rescue effort on August 27.Mr Gupta, 36, from Mumbai City, was pulled out to sea by a large wave when swimming with friends in the rough waves.He was pulled underwater and lost consciousness, but members of the King of the Beach volleyball league plunged into the water to help him.They found him on the ocean floor and pulled him back to the shore. Mr Gupta was not breathing, so they gave him CPR until an ambulance came.The victim who is assistant manager at Indigo restaurant in Flatts spent several days recuperating in the Intensive Care Unit at King Edward Memorial Hospital.He told The Royal Gazette two days after his accident that he “thought it would be the last day of my life,” and “I really appreciate the people who saved me”.His employers at the Four Star restaurant company later announced they would host a thank-you party for the rescuers.Giving further details yesterday, a spokesman said: “The company looks forward to providing assistance in catering a casual, beach BBQ feast for the Bermuda Volleyball Association’s 150-person end of season summer party at Horseshoe Bay this Saturday.“Our colleague, fully recovered, will be joining our catering team, having the opportunity in person for the first time to say ‘thank you’, especially to the King of the Beach Men’s league volleyball players directly involved in their life saving efforts. Four Star is happy to have a small part in what looks to be a fun, memorable, well fed afternoon on the beach.”
