A public discussion today will focus on amending the Human Rights Act to include age.The Human Rights Commission, in partnership with the Ministry of Youth, Families and Sports through the Department of Human Affairs, will be hosting the event at 6pm at the Cathedral Hall, in Hamilton.The event is free and open to all.According to a spokeswoman the event is to “gauge the sentiments of the public as it relates discrimination based on age”.The open forum is part of a Government initiative aimed at stamping out age discrimination in Bermuda. The public is only one of many stakeholders the Government is consulting regarding amending the Act.The spokeswoman said: “By adding age as a protected ground in the Act persons would be protected from discriminatory practices based on age.”At the public discussion participants will be able to express their views on the range of human rights issues people face due to their age.The spokeswoman added: “Persons who feel they may be a victim of age discrimination are encouraged to contact the Human Rights Commission with their complaints, which are then recorded for statistical purposes evidencing unfair treatment in Bermuda.”The Human Rights Commission can be reached at 295-5859 or e-mail humanrights@gov.bm.
