Govt gives $86,000 to fund repairs to seniors’ homes
Plans to upgrade seniors housing were given a boost yesterday when Government handed over a cheque for $86,000 to the Bermuda Housing Trust. At a brief handover ceremony at Purvis Park Seniors Residences Public Works Minister Michael Weeks explained the BHT which manages the property and other seniors residences, had been finding it more difficult to raise money and Government wanted to do what it could to help.Mr Weeks said that the donation was to help the BHT meet costs of repairing their seniors residences.“These repairs will range from painting, window and door repairs to plumbing, for example.“In doing so, we wish to ensure that seniors can benefit from improved living standards and continue to live independently through the provision of enhanced and safe accommodations,” Mr Weeks said. The Minister added: “We believe this assistance is in keeping with the Government’s commitment to assist those most vulnerable in society but also a reflection of our values as a community that recognises the important contribution that seniors have made in paving the foundation for our country.”Premier Paula Cox joined Mr Weeks to heap praise on the BHT, her administration and the Island’s senior citizens.“This Government has worked tirelessly to improve the quality of life for our seniors — this very important segment of our population,” Ms Cox said.“And it’s days like today that I am keen to remind the community that we are solving people’s problems, we are standing up for Bermudians and yes, we are indeed making sure and steady progress in delivering on our commitment to the residents of Bermuda.”The Premier commended the BHT and its Chairman Ronald Simons for their “selfless efforts”.“By providing them with accommodations and other services you’re making life a little easier for them in their Golden Years.”Mr Simmons expressed his gratitude for the donation.“Donations of this kind are not to be overlooked as many of the Trust’s 200 plus residents continue to contribute to the community through volunteerism, part time work, church and social organisation participation,” he said. The BHT was set up to provide affordable housing for Bermuda’s seniors. There was one surprise guest at yesterday’s media event — Opposition Leader Craig Cannonier.A spokesperson said that Mr Cannonier attended because Purvis Park is in his constituency. But there was no response to queries seeking his thoughts about the Government’s donation.
