Crash teenager was ‘thoughtful and gifted’
Family and friends last night mourned Shae-Quan Astwood of Sandys, who became the eighth road fatality of 2012 following a crash on Sunday evening.Mr Astwood had been on his way by motorcycle to visit his grandfather after watching his brother play football at the Southampton Rangers Club, according to Kevin Santucci, chaplain for the Corporation of Hamilton and the Seventh-Day Adventist Church.Police said the 18-year-old was seriously injured in a single vehicle collision at 5pm on South Shore Road, Southampton, near Turtle Bay Lane.According to devastated grandparents Arnold and Brenda Astwood, he died in King Edward VII Memorial Hospital on Tuesday.Mr Astwood recalled his grandson as a keen footballer who at age 14 travelled to the UK with his Somerset team.“He loved running as well, any type of sport,” he added. “He ran his first 24th of May marathon the year before last.”He is survived by his mother Arnelle, plus two brothers and three sisters, they said.“We are his grandparents, but we raised him from about age four,” Mrs Astwood added.She acknowledged that her grandson had led an occasionally troubled life, but was well loved by the community.Chaplain Santucci, who said he knew Mr Astwood all his life, recalled him as a skilled mechanic.“Anything with a small motor, he could fix. He was gifted, and very intelligent, and he loved his family.”Mr Astwood grew up in Sandys, attending Somerset Primary and Sandys Secondary Middle School before going on to the Berkeley Institute. Although he left high school early, he had gone on to obtain his GED, and dreamed of a sports career overseas.Said Chaplain Santucci, who watched a spiritual film with Mr Astwood on the night before the accident: “He was a very thoughtful young man.“He said to me one day, ‘The reason why young men get in trouble is because they are bored.’ He was very, very gifted.”His grandparents said a funeral is planned for next Wednesday, at the Southampton Seventh-Day Adventist Church.Police have asked for witnesses to Sunday night’s crash to contact Pc Gavin Richardson, or Pc Stephen Paynter, at 295-0011.
